About
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is a greenfield international airport under construction at Navi Mumbai (Panvel) — designed to relieve the chronically capacity-constrained Mumbai's existing CSM Airport (BOM, T2). Sanctioned in 2007 but plagued by 11 years of land-acquisition + environmental-clearance delays, construction finally began in 2018.
The project is executed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) — a 74:26 joint venture between Adani Group (controlling) and CIDCO (the Maharashtra state development corporation). Total cost: ₹18,000 crore for Phase 1 (~10 MPPA capacity); full build-out (~90 MPPA) projected at ₹40,000+ crore over 30 years.
Design features include: dual parallel runways (09/27 + 09L/27R) with 1.5 km separation for independent simultaneous operations, integrated low-cost + premium terminal architecture, 5,000-acre footprint (similar to Hyderabad's Shamshabad), and Mumbai Coastal Road + Atal Setu road connectivity. The airport is the first in India designed for 'one-stop' integrated multimodal transit — featuring MMRDA Metro Line 8 connection (under planning) and dedicated cargo rail link.
First commercial flight is currently targeted for October 2025, after multiple slippages from earlier 2019 and 2022 dates. When operational, NMIA will absorb 50% of Mumbai's air traffic by 2030, particularly low-cost and overflow international flights — relieving CSMIA's chronic cross-runway congestion.
