About
Bhogapuram International Airport (code VPM) is a greenfield airport under construction at Bhogapuram, ~40 km north of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The project replaces the existing Visakhapatnam Airport (which is owned by the Indian Navy and operates under restrictions on civilian capacity).
The airport is being developed by GMR Group under a 40-year concession from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Phase 1 (single 3.5 km runway + terminal, 6 MPPA capacity) is targeted for commissioning in 2026 at ₹3,200 crore. Full build-out over 30 years targets 12 MPPA capacity.
Design features include: dual-cargo + passenger terminal, integrated Bhogapuram-Vizag highway access, and provision for a future Bhogapuram-Vizag dedicated metro link. The airport sits in the Bhogapuram Industrial Park, a 5,000-acre integrated industrial zone designed around the airport — making this one of India's first 'aerotropolis'-style airport developments.
The Andhra Pradesh state government has prioritised the project as the keystone of the region's logistics + industrial growth strategy. Together with the planned Vizag Port expansion + Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC), the Bhogapuram airport is part of the broader strategic infrastructure ecosystem of north-coastal Andhra Pradesh.
