Summary

IS 3589 covers welded steel pipes for water supply, sewerage, and structural use. Sizes from 168mm to 2540mm diameter. ERW for smaller sizes, SAW for larger. This is the specification for the large-diameter MS pipes used in bulk water transmission, sewer force mains, and structural piling.

Specification for ERW and SAW steel pipes for water supply, sewerage, and general structural use covering grades, dimensions, and testing.

Practical Notes
! IS 3589 pipes are used for water transmission mains where DI (IS 8329) is too expensive for large diameters.
! 100% UT of weld seam is mandatory — weld quality determines pipe integrity.
! Internal cement mortar lining (IS 11906) is standard for water supply pipes.
! External coating options: coal tar enamel, polyethylene, or fusion bonded epoxy depending on soil conditions.
! For structural piling, specify Grade Fe 410 or Fe 450 with increased wall thickness.
