IS 3589:2020 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for electric resistance welded and submerged arc welded steel pipes for water and sewerage. IS 3589 covers welded steel pipes for water supply, sewerage, and structural use. Sizes from 168mm to 2540mm diameter. ERW for smaller sizes, SAW for larger. This is the specification for the large-diameter MS pipes used in bulk water transmission, sewer force mains, and structural piling.
Specification for ERW and SAW steel pipes for water supply, sewerage, and general structural use covering grades, dimensions, and testing.
IS 3589 covers large-diameter pipes (168mm+) for water/sewer/structural use — ERW and SAW welding. IS 1161 covers smaller-diameter steel tubes (15mm-150mm) for structural and general engineering — primarily ERW.
Steel pipe vs DI pipe for water supply?+
Steel (IS 3589): for large diameters (>600mm) where DI is too expensive, and for high-pressure transmission mains. DI (IS 8329): for distribution (80-600mm), better corrosion resistance, longer maintenance-free life.
