IS 1755 guides selection of the correct VG bitumen grade based on climate and traffic, and proper storage practices. VG-30 for most India, VG-40 for heavy traffic/high temp, VG-10 for cold regions. Storage temperature must be maintained to prevent hardening.
Code of practice for selecting appropriate bitumen grade and proper storage of bituminous materials at construction sites and depots.
Key Values
VG-10 regionCold climate (hill roads, Kashmir)
VG-30 regionMost of India (plains)
VG-40 regionHigh temperature + heavy traffic
Practical Notes
! VG-30 is the default grade for most Indian highway projects — specify VG-40 only for heavy traffic or extreme heat.
! Never heat bitumen above 175°C — it causes irreversible hardening (oxidation).
! Bitumen in storage should be periodically tested for penetration — prolonged heating degrades it.
! Always use VG-10 for surface dressing and cold weather work.
