IS 1201 is the first in the series of bitumen test standards (IS 1201-1220). It covers sampling methods for all bituminous materials. Proper sampling is critical as bitumen properties change with temperature, oxidation, and settling. Referenced by IS 73 and all bitumen test methods.
Methods for sampling bitumen, cutback bitumen, bitumen emulsion, tar, and other bituminous materials from drums, tankers, and bulk storage for testing.
Key Values
Min sample for penetration test500 g
Min sample for softening point200 g
Sampling temperature (paving bitumen)Above pouring temperature
Practical Notes
! Always sample bitumen at the correct temperature — cold bitumen does not give representative samples.
! For tanker deliveries, sample from the top, middle, and bottom of the tanker to detect segregation.
! Bitumen samples must be tested within specified time — ageing changes penetration and softening point values.
! IS 1201-1220 form the complete bitumen testing series: 1201 (sampling), 1203 (penetration), 1205 (softening point), 1206 (viscosity), 1208 (ductility).
