IS 1201:2020 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for methods for testing tar and bituminous materials — sampling. IS 1201 is the first in the series of bitumen test standards (IS 1201-1220). It covers sampling methods for all bituminous materials. Proper sampling is critical as bitumen properties change with temperature, oxidation, and settling. Referenced by IS 73 and all bitumen test methods.

It is a series of 20 test methods for bituminous materials: IS 1201 (sampling), IS 1203 (penetration), IS 1205 (softening point), IS 1206 (viscosity), IS 1208 (ductility), and others covering flash point, solubility, water content, etc.
How much bitumen sample is needed?+
Minimum 500g for a complete test suite (penetration, softening point, ductility). For single tests, refer to Table 1 in IS 1201 for specific quantities.
