- RCC grade defaults to M20 (DSR 5.1.2 / 5.2.2 / 5.3). For box culverts under NH carriageway or larger 3 m+ span, bump to M25 (DSR 4.20.1.4) — engineering judgment + design check needed.
- Steel reinforcement: 120 kg/m³ of total RCC volume — typical for box culverts. Heavy IRC Class A/AA loading may push to 150 kg/m³. Detailed BBS calculations needed per IRC 21 for actual reinforcement.
- Wing walls are 4 nos × 230 mm brick masonry splayed at 45° outward. Length defaults to 2 m each. Set to 0 to skip if site has natural ground containment.
- Excludes: bearing pads / elastomeric bearings at slab-wall junction (only if span > 6 m + simply-supported design); haunches at slab-wall corner (small triangular RCC, +5% RCC); parapet / railing on deck for safe pedestrian use; expansion joints (every 30 m linear); apron / curtain wall at scour-prone outlets (DSR 7.X); waterproofing of deck (only for culverts < 0.6 m earth cover).
- For carriageway span > 3 m, design as a SLAB CULVERT (separate template, coming Wave 4) — box culvert becomes uneconomical above 3 m, and slab culvert with abutments is preferred.
**RCC box culverts** are the workhorse cross-drainage structure on Indian roads above 600 mm diameter equivalent — the PMGSY / state-PWD / NH / SH standard for any drainage span between 1 m and 3 m. Above 3 m span, slab culverts / minor bridges take over. The IRC SP 13 + IRC 6 + IRC 21 + IS 456 standard configuration: single-cell M20 RCC box with monolithic raft + walls + deck slab, brick masonry wing walls splayed at 45°, founded on PCC bed. This BOQ Builder generates the complete cost per CPWD DSR 2023 for any combination of internal span, internal height, wall/slab/raft thickness and length — for 1×1 m through 3×3 m configurations.
When to use a box culvert vs Hume pipe vs slab culvert
**Hume pipe culvert** (450-1200 mm dia, single pipe) — small catchments, traffic intensity low-medium, simple drainage. Economical and quick to construct. **Box culvert** (1-3 m span × 1-3 m height) — moderate catchments, higher discharge, NH/SH carriageway crossings, drainage spans where pipes become uneconomical. The crossover from pipe to box culvert happens around 1200 mm pipe diameter — beyond that, a box culvert is cheaper and structurally better. **Slab culvert / minor bridge** (4-12 m span) — large drainage, channel + nallah crossings, where the box becomes large enough that an open-bottomed structure with abutments + deck is more economical than a box. Above 12 m, design as a full bridge per IRC 5 + IRC 6.
What's in a box culvert BOQ
Twelve items in the default configuration. **Earthwork** (DSR 2.8.1) — foundation trench excavation in all-kinds-of-soil. **PCC bed** (DSR 4.1.8) — 100 mm of 1:4:8 below raft. **RCC raft** (DSR 5.1.2) — M20 grade, full external width, typically 300 mm thick. **RCC walls** (DSR 5.2.2) — two walls, wall thickness × internal height × length. **RCC deck slab** (DSR 5.3) — M20 grade, full external width, typically 300 mm thick. **Centering** (DSR 5.9.1, 5.9.2, 5.9.3) — for raft, walls, slab. **Steel reinforcement** (DSR 5.22.6) — TMT Fe-500D, ~120 kg/m³ of RCC. **Wing walls** (DSR 6.4.2 + 4.10) — 4 nos × 230 mm brick masonry × ~2 m length each + DPC band. **Backfill** (DSR 2.25) — excavated earth back-filled around walls. Total for a default 2×2 × 8 m box: ~₹6-8 lakh in CPWD DSR rates.
Wall and slab thickness — how to choose
**Wall thickness**: 250 mm minimum for small (1×1) culverts; 300 mm standard for 2×2; 350 mm for 3×3 and heavy NH loading. Wall designs as a vertical slab resisting earth pressure + live load from carriageway above. **Slab thickness**: 250 mm for 1 m span; 300 mm for 2 m; 350 mm for 3 m. Deck slab carries IRC Class A or AA wheel loads — designed as a one-way slab spanning between walls. **Raft thickness**: usually equal to slab thickness; provides bearing-area distribution + stiffness against wall rotation. For soft soil, increase raft to 400 mm + add pile foundations if SBC < 80 kN/m². The Builder's defaults (300/300/300 mm) are appropriate for typical 2 m span on firm soil with IRC Class A loading.
