Definition

Block board is a manufactured wood panel with a core of solid wood blocks (typically 25 mm wide softwood strips) glued between hardwood veneer faces. Used for furniture, doors, wall panelling, and partitions. Per IS 1659:2004, block board is graded by glue (BWP, BWR, MR), density (typically 500-600 kg/m³), and thickness (12-32 mm). Major Indian block board suppliers: Century Ply, Greenply, Sharon Ply, Action Tesa.

Construction: (1) Core — softwood blocks (typically pine or eucalyptus) 25 × 25 mm cross-section, side-glued in long strips. (2) Inner veneers — 1.0-1.5 mm hardwood (gurjan, eucalyptus). (3) Face veneers — 0.6-1.0 mm hardwood (gurjan, mahogany, teak). (4) Adhesive — phenol formaldehyde for BWP grade; urea formaldehyde for MR. (5) Standard sizes — 8 × 4 ft (2440 × 1220 mm); thicknesses 12, 16, 19, 25, 32 mm. (6) Service life — 15-20 years in furniture; 5-10 years in exterior applications (with BWP glue).

Applications: (1) Furniture — wardrobes, cabinets, doors; alternative to plywood for cheaper construction. (2) Wall panelling and partitions — interior decorative. (3) Office furniture and store fixtures. (4) Children's furniture — softer than plywood, less likely to splinter. (5) Door frames and shutters — when finished with veneer or laminate. Cost: ₹50-150/sqft typical, lower than equivalent plywood.

Frequently asked
What is block board?
Block board is a manufactured wood panel with a core of solid wood blocks (typically 25 mm wide softwood strips) glued between hardwood veneer faces. Per IS 1659:2004. Used for furniture, doors, wall panelling, and partitions. Cheaper than plywood; suitable for moderate-load applications.
What is the difference between block board and plywood?
Block board: solid wood block core (typically softwood blocks) + hardwood veneer faces. Cheaper, less stable for thin-section use. Plywood: cross-laminated hardwood veneers throughout. Stronger, more dimensionally stable. Block board good for: furniture, panels, doors. Plywood better for: thin sections, structural applications, multi-cycle shuttering reuse.
Is block board suitable for kitchen furniture?
Yes if BWP (Boiling Water Proof) grade with proper finish (laminate, veneer + sealant). MR grade is inadequate for kitchen humidity. Cost: BWP block board ~30% more than MR. Performance: properly finished BWP block board lasts 15-20 years in kitchen applications. Always specify BWP for water-exposed furniture, not the cheaper MR or commercial.
