IS 9167:2019 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for bitumen emulsion for roads. IS 9167 covers bitumen emulsion — bitumen dispersed in water with an emulsifier. Used for tack coat (between pavement layers), prime coat (on granular base), surface dressing, and cold mix. Applied at ambient temperature unlike hot bitumen (IS 73).

What is the difference between RS, MS, and SS emulsion?+
RS (Rapid Setting): breaks quickly on contact with aggregate — for surface dressing, chip seal. MS (Medium Setting): for mixing with coarse aggregate — premix/cold mix. SS (Slow Setting): for tack coat and mixing with fine aggregate — stable during mixing.
