This standard specifies the requirements for woven wire cloth test sieves used for particle size analysis of granular materials like soils, aggregates, and powders. It details aperture size tolerances, acceptable wire diameters, and standard frame dimensions essential for consistent and standardized laboratory testing.

Quick Reference Values
Standard frame diameters200 mm and 300 mm
Full depth for 200 mm diameter frame50 mm
Half depth for 200 mm diameter frame25 mm
Wire cloth aperture range32 microns to 125 mm
Practical Notes
Woven wire cloth sieves, especially fine ones (e.g., 75 microns), are susceptible to blinding (clogging) and wire distortion; always use a soft bristle brush rather than sharp objects to clean the mesh.
For highly abrasive materials, specify stainless steel wire cloth rather than brass or phosphor bronze to maintain aperture tolerances and increase the lifespan of the sieve.
Routinely verify that sieve frames nest perfectly with lids and receiver pans to prevent fine material loss during mechanical shaking.
