Curing Periods for Concrete

IS 456:2000 · Clause 13.5 — Curing
Minimum curing period ensures adequate hydration of cement for strength and durability. IS 456 mandates minimum 7 days for OPC and 10 days for blended cements. Longer curing is needed for severe exposure conditions.

Precast elements3–7 daysSteam curing may be used
Curing Methods
ItemCuring PeriodNote
Ponding (most effective for slabs)50mm water on slab surface, build bunds with mud
Wet hessian / gunny bagsKeep continuously wet, re-wet 3–4 times/day
Sprinkling water3–4 times/day minimum, more in summer
Curing compound (membrane)Apply within 2 hrs of finishing, 200–300 g/m²
Plastic sheet coveringAfter initial set, prevents evaporation
Steam curing (precast)60–80°C for 12–16 hrs, then gradual cooling
Notes
Curing must begin as soon as concrete surface can be wetted without damage (within 12–24 hrs of placing)
Temperature below 5°C: delay curing start, provide insulation, extend period by 50%
Hot weather (>40°C): start curing immediately after finishing, use curing compound + wet cover
Minimum 7 days means the FULL 7 days — not 6.5 days
Cube specimens: cure in water at 27±2°C for 7 and 28 days (IS 516)
Removing formwork is NOT the same as starting curing — curing should begin much earlier
