IS 4218:1976 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for foundation bolts. IS 4218 specifies the basic profile, general plan, dimensions, and tolerances for ISO metric screw threads. It is the fundamental standard applied to the threading of fasteners, including structural foundation bolts, to ensure strict geometric compatibility and interchangeability.
Lays down requirements for foundation bolts of nominal sizes 12 to 100 mm.

|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Material Grade (Min. Yield Strength) | ≈ 250 MPa (for steel conforming to IS 2062 Gr E250) | 36 ksi (248 MPa) | ASTM F1554 (Grade 36) |
| Available High-Strength Grade (Min. Yield Strength) | Not defined in IS 4218; requires specifying higher-grade steel separately (e.g. IS 2062 E410 for 410 MPa). | 105 ksi (724 MPa) | ASTM F1554 (Grade 105) |
| Grade Identification Method | Stamped manufacturer's mark and material details. | Permanent color coding on the bolt end (e.g., Blue, Yellow, Red). | ASTM F1554 |
| Standardized Bolt Geometries | 6 specific types defined (Hooked, Bent, Eye, Swedge, Plate, Lewis). | 3 general forms defined (Straight, Bent, Headed). | ASTM F1554 |
| Thread Specification | IS 1367 / IS 4218 (Part 3) (Metric coarse threads) | ASME B1.1 (Unified Inch Screw Threads - UNC) | ASTM F1554 |
