Plywood for Concrete Shuttering Work

EN 636 · APA PS 1
CurrentFrequently UsedSpecificationMaterials Science · Timber and Wood
Summary

IS 3965 specifies plywood for concrete shuttering — must be BWP (Boiling Water Proof) grade to withstand moisture from fresh concrete. Film-faced (phenolic coating) versions give smoother concrete finish and more reuse cycles. Standard thickness is 12mm and 18mm.

Specification for plywood specifically designed for use as concrete shuttering/formwork, covering construction, bonding, dimensions, mechanical properties, and surface quality.

Practical Notes
! NEVER use MR (Moisture Resistant) grade plywood for shuttering — it will delaminate from concrete moisture.
! Film-faced (brown/black phenolic overlay) plywood gives smooth concrete finish and lasts 50+ cycles.
! Apply mould release oil before every pour — prevents concrete bonding and extends plywood life.
! 12mm is standard for slabs. 18mm for walls and columns where concrete pressure is higher.
! ISI mark ensures BWP quality — unmarked 'shuttering ply' may be MR grade disguised as BWP.
