IS 14732:2000 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for laying of precast concrete blocks for paving. This standard provides a code of practice for laying precast concrete blocks for paving applications. It details the requirements for materials, subgrade and sub-base preparation, laying of bedding sand and blocks, compaction, and joint filling to create a durable interlocking pavement system.
Provides guidelines for the laying and installation of precast concrete blocks for various paving applications.

Practical Notes
! Ensure robust and well-constructed edge restraints are in place before laying blocks, as they are critical for the pavement's structural integrity.
! The bedding sand should be screeded to the correct uncompacted thickness and should not be disturbed before laying the blocks. Do not pre-compact the bedding sand.
! Compaction should be done with a high-frequency, low-amplitude plate vibrator, starting from the edges and working towards the center. Multiple passes are required until no further settlement is observed.

Frequently Asked Questions4
What is the correct thickness for the bedding sand layer?+
The compacted thickness should be between 20 mm and 40 mm (Clause 8.1).
What are the grading requirements for bedding sand?+
The sand must conform to Table 1, with key requirements being 95-100% passing the 2.36 mm sieve and less than 10% passing the 150-micron sieve.
What is the acceptable tolerance for the final paved surface level?+
The finished surface should not deviate by more than ±10 mm when checked with a 3-meter straight edge (Clause 12.1).
What material is used for filling joints between pavers?+
Dry, fine sand that passes a 2.36 mm IS Sieve and is free from soluble salts (Clause 11.1).
