Notes & assumptions
  • Trapezoidal section: typical 0.6 m crest + 2.0 m base + 1.8 m height for plain-terrain MGNREGA check dam. Hilly-terrain dams have wider base (2:1 d/s slope, 1:1 u/s) for stability.
  • Foundation depth 0.6 m below stream bed is standard; increase to 1.0-1.5 m in alluvial / scour-prone beds with un-keyed foundation.
  • Curtain wall (cut-off wall) is a 0.30 × 0.30 m random-rubble strip below dam body at upstream face — prevents seepage scour. Universal in MGNREGA check-dam design.
  • Downstream apron is a 0.30 m thick random-rubble stone-pitched pad extending 2-3 m downstream of dam toe — prevents erosion from falling water. Skip only if natural rock outcrop exists at downstream face.
  • PCC coping (100 mm) on crest is a protective concrete band to prevent wave-overtopping erosion. Toggle off for very-low-budget MGNREGA dams under 1.2 m height.
  • Excludes: stilling basin / energy dissipator (for dams > 3 m height per IS 6066); inlet/outlet sluice with gate (only required for irrigation off-take); fish-pass / wildlife crossing (where ecological mandate exists); upstream silt-fence / sediment basin; gabion side-wing extensions; bed protection upstream of dam (typically not needed for small dams).

**Check dams** are the workhorse water-conservation structure in India's watershed schemes — MGNREGA's water-conservation guidelines mandate 30-65% of block spending on water works, and check dams (along with farm ponds) dominate that allocation. The standard CPWD / IS 6066 configuration is a **trapezoidal random-rubble masonry weir** spanning the drainage line, with PCC bed below + PCC coping on top + stone-pitched apron downstream + curtain wall upstream. Sized 5-50 m crest length × 1-3 m height per micro-watershed needs. This BOQ Builder generates the complete cost per CPWD DSR 2023.

Types of check dams and when to use each

**Loose-boulder check dam** — smallest + cheapest, just rocks piled across a drainage line, ~₹500-1,000/m³. For micro-watersheds with stable banks + low rainfall, MGNREGA's most basic permissible work. Lasts 3-5 years before requiring re-grading. **Random-rubble masonry check dam** (this Builder) — stone-in-cement-mortar weir, trapezoidal cross-section, 1-3 m height. Standard for MGNREGA + PMKSY block-watershed projects. ₹3,500-7,500/m³. Lasts 15-25 years. **RCC check dam** — used for catchment areas > 10 hectares, height > 3 m, or where bank-erosion is severe. Uses RCC instead of stone masonry for the dam body. ₹9,000-12,000/m³. Lasts 30-50 years. **Gabion check dam** — hexagonal-wire-mesh-encased rock fill, used for very narrow / steep channels where rigid masonry would crack. Lasts 10-20 years. This Builder is for the standard random-rubble version which fits 90% of MGNREGA + PMKSY projects.

What's in the BOQ and what's excluded

**Included** — earthwork in foundation trench across the drainage line, 100 mm PCC bed below masonry, random-rubble foundation masonry (DSR 7.1.1) below stream bed, random-rubble dam body (DSR 7.2.1) above bed, PCC coping (DSR 4.1.3) on crest, downstream apron (stone-pitched with 300 mm RRM thick), upstream curtain wall (cut-off wall). **Excluded** — stilling basin / energy dissipator (required for dams > 3 m height per IS 6066 Cl. 7.5 — small concrete basin downstream of toe); inlet/outlet sluice + gate (only if irrigation off-take is needed); fish-pass / step-fall (where ecological mandate from forest dept); upstream silt-fence / sediment basin to extend dam lifespan; gabion wing-walls on either bank for slope stabilisation; bed protection upstream (rip-rap stone pitching for 5-10 m up-stream of dam, only for high-velocity channels). For most rural MGNREGA + PMKSY check dams, the items in this Builder are sufficient — the excluded items are project-specific add-ons.

Frequently asked questions
Approximate CPWD DSR 2023 rates for typical MGNREGA + PMKSY check dam (12 m crest × 1.8 m height × 2 m base × 0.6 m crest, with coping + apron + curtain wall): ₹2.5-3.5 lakh. Per-metre-of-crest: ₹20,000-30,000. State-PWD rates run 8-15% below DSR. MGNREGA allocates roughly ₹2-3 lakh per check dam in plain-terrain rural blocks; hilly-terrain dams get higher allocation. PMKSY can co-fund larger community dams up to ₹15 lakh.
