Brickwork Quantities — Bricks & Mortar per m³

IS 1077:1992 / IS 2212:1991 · Common burnt clay building bricks & code of practice for brickwork
Brick and mortar quantities for cement-mortar brickwork. Standard Indian brick = 230×115×75 mm (with 10 mm joints, nominal size = 240×125×85 mm). Modular brick = 190×90×90 mm (nominal 200×100×100 mm). Quantities below include 5% breakage and 30% mortar bulking.

Mortar Mix Variations (per m³ of brickwork)
Standard brick. Higher cement = stronger mortar but more cost

Quick Estimating Formulas

No. of bricks (standard)Volume × 500 / m³Gives bricks for any wall thickness
Mortar per m³ brickwork≈ 30% of wall volumeAlready in dry volume
Cement bags per m³ (1:6)≈ 1.26 bagsMultiply for other ratios
Sand per m³ brickwork≈ 0.30 m³Same regardless of mix ratio
Wastage on bricksAdd 5%Order 525 instead of 500
Notes
Brick consumption is fairly insensitive to mortar ratio — only mortar quantity changes
Always order 5% extra bricks to cover breakage and selection
Soak bricks in water for 1+ hour before laying — dry bricks suck water from mortar and weaken bond
Brickwork height per day ≤ 1.5 m to avoid joint compression
Compressive strength of brick (IS 1077): Class 35, 30, 25, 20, 17.5, 15, 12.5, 10, 7.5, 5, 3.5 N/mm²
Use Class 7.5 or above for load-bearing work
AAC blocks save ~30% mortar and ~70% wall self-weight vs traditional brick
Verify brick size at delivery — older Indian brick (230×115×75) and modular (190×90×90) are NOT interchangeable
Re-pointing of old brickwork: ≈ 8 kg cement + 0.04 m³ sand per m² wall area
