Cement Types & Grades
OPC 33/43/53 PPC PSC SRC and rapid hardening cement varieties per IS standards
Cement types used in Indian construction are governed by IS standards specifying chemistry, properties, and intended use. Major types: (1) Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) — IS 269; grades 33, 43, 53. (2) Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) — IS 1489 Part 1; OPC + 15-35% fly ash. (3) Portland Slag Cement (PSC) — IS 455; OPC + 25-70% GGBS. (4) Sulphate Resistant Cement (SRC) — IS 12330; for sulphate-rich groundwater. (5) Rapid Hardening Cement (RHC) — IS 8041; faster strength gain; for emergency repair. (6) Low Heat Cement — IS 12600; for mass concrete. (7) White Cement — IS 8042; for architectural finishes. (8) Hydrophobic Cement — IS 8043; for marine and damp conditions.
Indian market dominance (April 2026): PPC ~70% of total cement consumption (cheaper than OPC, sustainable, durability advantages). OPC ~25% (high-strength, pre-stressed). PSC ~3% (regional, marine). Specialty cements (SRC, RHC, white, low heat) <2% combined. Major Indian manufacturers: Ultratech (Aditya Birla), ACC, Ambuja, Shree Cement, Dalmia, Ramco, JK Cement, India Cements. The most-overlooked aspect of Indian cement procurement: brand consistency. Within a brand, consistency is generally good. Across brands, w/c ratios and PCE compatibilities vary; switching brands mid-project requires mix re-design and trial mixes.
- All RCC construction (OPC and PPC dominant)
- Specialty applications (SRC for marine/sulphate, RHC for repair, low-heat for mass concrete)
- Architectural finishes (white cement)
- Damp environments (hydrophobic cement)
- Pre-stressed concrete (typically OPC 53)
