About
Purvanchal Expressway is Uttar Pradesh's longest expressway and the eastern flagship of UPEIDA's expressway-led development strategy. The 340.8 km six-lane access-controlled corridor connects Lucknow (UP capital) to Ghazipur (eastern UP, near the Bihar border), passing through nine districts in the politically sensitive Purvanchal region.
The project was sanctioned in 2018 and delivered in just 36 months — exceptionally fast for an Indian expressway of this scale. UPEIDA tendered the work in 8 packages totalling ₹22,497 crore, with L&T, Apco Infratech, Gayatri, and Oriental Structural Engineers leading the construction. Inauguration was performed by Prime Minister Modi on 16 November 2021 with a Rafale and Sukhoi-30 MKI fly-past on the dedicated 3.2 km airstrip near Sultanpur — a feature designed for emergency Air Force operations.
Design features include: 6-lane (3+3) configuration with provision for future 8-lane upgrade, design speed 120 km/h, 18 bridges (including 13 over the Ganga, Gomti, Saryu, and other rivers), 7 toll plazas, 4 jan suvidha kendras (rest stops), and the airstrip. Average daily traffic at opening: 15,000 vehicles, with cargo expected to scale to 80,000+ vehicles/day at full development.
The expressway has dramatically improved connectivity for eastern UP, shaving the Lucknow-Ghazipur travel time from 9 hours to 4. It is part of UP's broader expressway grid that includes Agra-Lucknow (2017), Bundelkhand (2022), and the upcoming Gorakhpur-Siliguri.
