About

158 km eight-lane Outer Ring Road around Hyderabad — India's first complete ring expressway around a metropolitan area, with phased completion 2008-2018.
Also known asORR HyderabadHyderabad ORR

Hyderabad Outer Ring Road (ORR) is a 158 km eight-lane access-controlled ring expressway encircling Hyderabad — India's first complete ring expressway around a metropolitan area. Construction began in 2006 with phased opening of segments through 2018, when the final eastern arc was commissioned.

The ORR connects 11 major radial highways converging on Hyderabad — including NH-44 (Bengaluru), NH-65 (Pune-Mumbai), NH-163 (Vijayawada), NH-161 (Karimnagar), and others. By providing a high-speed bypass around the city, the ORR diverts ~70% of through-traffic away from Hyderabad's dense urban roads, dramatically reducing inner-city congestion and pollution.

The project was executed by Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), a Telangana state-owned SPV, in 6 packages totalling ₹8,000 crore. Design features: 8-lane (4+4) configuration with 4-lane service roads in high-density sections, design speed 120 km/h, integrated truck terminals at major interchanges, and dedicated road infrastructure for the planned Hyderabad ORR Industrial Corridor (110+ km of integrated industrial development).

The ORR is also significant as India's first 'land monetization' style ring road — significant adjacent commercial real-estate development was permitted by the Telangana government as part of the project funding model. Today the ORR + adjacent industrial belt accounts for ~25% of Telangana's GSDP.
