About
Hyderabad MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) is a suburban rail network operating in the Hyderabad metropolitan area — a 109 km broad-gauge electrified system using Indian Railways' existing infrastructure for shorter-distance passenger commutes. The system has been operational since 2003 (Phase 1) and continues to grow with the Phase 2 extension that progressively adds new lines.
The MMTS uses Indian Railways' standard broad-gauge tracks shared with mainline trains — but with dedicated suburban-style stations, MMTS-only trainsets, and integrated ticketing. The fleet uses ICF-built 9-coach EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trainsets running on 25 kV AC overhead. Phase 1 (45 km) connects key Hyderabad stations including Lingampally-Falaknuma + Lingampally-Hyderabad, with Phase 2 extending to Yedwada, Pamballi, and other peri-urban areas.
The system is operated by South Central Railway (Indian Railways) — distinguishing it from the separate Hyderabad Metro (PPP-operated by L&T-LTMRH) which runs on standalone elevated infrastructure. The two systems serve complementary roles: MMTS handles inter-city + peri-urban traffic on broad-gauge, while Metro handles intra-city traffic on standard-gauge.
Daily ridership averages 200,000 across all MMTS routes (2024). The system is significant as one of India's earlier successful suburban rail networks (along with Mumbai Suburban Railway and Chennai Suburban Railway) and demonstrated the operational viability of using Indian Railways' broad-gauge infrastructure for urban transit in tier-1 cities.
