About
The Ganga Expressway is the largest greenfield expressway under construction in India — a 594 km six-lane access-controlled corridor connecting Meerut (western UP) to Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad, eastern UP). Sanctioned in 2018 and constructed in 4 packages totalling ₹36,230 crore between 2021 and 2025, the expressway is UP's flagship Mahakumbh-2025 readiness project — designed to handle the once-in-12-years Magh Mela pilgrimage influx of 250+ million pilgrims to Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam.
UPEIDA executed the project in 4 packages: Group A (L&T, ~131 km), Group B (IRB Infrastructure, ~159 km), Group C (Adani Group, ~155 km), Group D (Apco Infratech, ~149 km). The phased opening began with Group D (eastern segment) in late 2024, with full opening targeted for early 2025.
Design features: 6-lane (3+3) main carriageway, design speed 120 km/h, 8 toll plazas, 7 jan suvidha kendras, and a 3.5 km airstrip at Sultanpur for emergency IAF operations (similar to Purvanchal). The alignment crosses the Ganga at two locations and 13 other major rivers, with 14 major bridges + 4 rail-over-bridges.
The expressway connects to: Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Meerut (north end), Yamuna + Agra-Lucknow + Purvanchal expressways at Prayagraj/Lucknow (south end). Together this creates a 1,300+ km continuous expressway from Delhi NCR to Prayagraj — the largest contiguous expressway corridor in India.
