About
Ahmedabad Metro is the rapid transit system for Ahmedabad, Gujarat, operated by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC). Phase 1 covers 40.03 km across two lines: the East-West Line (Vastral Gam-Thaltej, 21 km) and the North-South Line (APMC Vasna-Motera Stadium, 19 km).
Revenue services began on the elevated portions of both lines in March 2019, with the underground sections through Old Ahmedabad's heritage core opening in stages through 2022. The system uses standard-gauge (1,435 mm) and TITAGARH FIRema 3-coach trainsets running on 25 kV AC.
GMRC executed the project at ₹12,925 crore between 2015 and 2022, with JICA providing 65% via soft loans. The civil construction was tendered in 8 packages, with L&T, Afcons, and Tata Projects sharing the work. The 6.6 km underground section through Old Ahmedabad — passing through Manek Chowk and the Sabarmati riverside — was one of the most densely-engineered underground stretches in Gujarat, requiring TBM operations through soft alluvium below the water table while underpinning 19th-century heritage buildings.
The metro connects to GIFT City (India's first IFSC) via the eastern terminus and to Sabarmati Riverfront via the central segment. Daily ridership averages 90,000 (2024) and is projected to scale to 250,000+ at full Phase 2 maturity. Phase 2 (28 km extension to Gandhinagar) is under construction.
