About the material

About plumbing

Plumbing materials in India follow IS 15778 (CPVC piping for hot/cold water), IS 4985 (uPVC for cold water only), IS 15801 (PPR piping), IS 1239 (galvanised iron pipes), IS 2643 (cast-iron soil pipes), and IS 13983 (HDPE for underground). CPVC has largely replaced GI in residential hot-and-cold supply since 2010 — lighter, corrosion-free, easier to install. uPVC remains the default for cold-only supply and SWR drainage. Sanitaryware (water closets, wash basins, shower mixers) follows IS 2556 (vitreous china) and is dominated by Kohler, Hindware, Cera, Parryware, and Jaquar brands.

What moves prices

Price drivers

  • PVC resin price — tracks crude oil and imported polyvinyl chloride
  • Copper price (for faucets, fittings) — global LME
  • Brass price (faucets, valves)
  • Vitreous china manufacturing cost (kiln gas + clay)
  • Import duty on Chinese sanitaryware
  • Brand premium — Jaquar/Kohler commands 2-3× generic
Market trend

Recent plumbing price history

Plumbing prices have tracked crude oil closely — 2023 saw 15-20 % rise on crude volatility, 2024-25 saw softening. CPVC (Astral, Supreme) has stabilised in 2026 after years of rapid growth; uPVC is commoditised. Sanitaryware premium segment (Kohler, Jaquar premium) continues to rise 8-10 % YoY on urban demand; economy segment (Parryware, Cera standard) is price-stable.

Buying guide

Buying tips

  • CPVC for hot water lines; uPVC for cold only (uPVC deforms > 45°C)
  • Use SCH 40 for buried/pressure applications; SCH 80 for high-pressure industrial
  • Always use CPVC primer + solvent cement (Astral SPC or equivalent) — not the generic PVC cement
  • Branded pipes (Astral, Supreme) cost 15-25 % more but come with 50-year warranty — skip only for temporary installations
  • Sanitaryware: mid-tier (Hindware, Cera standard) is adequate for rental; premium (Kohler, Jaquar Premium) for owner-occupier
FAQs

Frequently asked questions

CPVC or PPR for hot water?
Both work. CPVC (Astral, Supreme): solvent-welded joints, cheaper, easier to repair with a solvent bond. PPR (Prince, Niron): heat-fused joints, more durable (lifetime), but needs a fusion tool. CPVC for most Indian residential; PPR for commercial/hospitality where long-term reliability justifies premium.
uPVC or CPVC pricing — why the gap?
CPVC is chlorinated PVC — handles hot water up to 90°C. Manufacturing uses extra chlorine-addition process. Hence CPVC = 2-2.5× uPVC price. Use uPVC only for cold-only supply; mixing them saves money but ruins the hot line within a year.
Jaquar Continental vs Premium?
Jaquar Continental: economy range (₹1,500-4,000 fittings) — adequate for rental/budget. Jaquar Premium (Kubix Prime, etc., ₹6,000-15,000): thicker chrome, better ceramic cartridge, 10-year warranty. Premium pays for itself in 5-6 years via no leakage/maintenance.
Which sanitaryware brand?
Kohler: premium luxury segment (₹30,000+ WCs). Hindware / Cera: mid-market (₹8,000-25,000). Parryware: value (₹5,000-15,000). All IS 2556 compliant. Choose on aesthetics, budget, and post-sales service availability in your city.
How much plumbing for a 2BHK?
Typical 2BHK (1,000 sqft, 2 bathrooms + kitchen): ~₹80,000-1,20,000 for pipes + fittings (economy CPVC/uPVC mix). Premium (Astral + Jaquar Continental): ₹1,50,000-2,00,000. Luxury (Astral + Kohler): ₹3,00,000+. Detailed BOQ via InfraLens Material Calculator.
