IS 15801:2008 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for polypropylene-random copolymer pipes for hot and cold water supplies. This standard specifies the requirements for polypropylene-random copolymer (PP-R) pipes used in residential and commercial buildings for hot and cold water distribution systems. It covers material properties, dimensions, pressure ratings, performance requirements, and marking to ensure safety and reliability.

BIM-relevant code. See the BIM Hub for ISO 19650, IFC, and LOD/LOIN frameworks used alongside it.
Practical Notes
! Ensure the correct pipe class (e.g., PN10, PN16, PN20) is selected based on the system's maximum operating temperature and pressure requirements as per Annex A.
! Pipes are joined using heat fusion (socket or butt fusion), which requires specialized equipment and trained personnel for a leak-proof joint.
! Pipes must be protected from direct sunlight (UV radiation) as PP-R can degrade over time. Use UV-resistant lagging or select carbon black-filled pipes for exposed applications.

Key Differences
≠IS 15801:2008 is based on the withdrawn ISO 15874-2:2003 and therefore does not include provisions for newer materials like PP-RCT (Polypropylene-Random Crystalline Temperature), which are covered in the current ISO 15874-2:2018.
≠The Indian Standard mandates the BIS Standard Mark (ISI mark) on the pipes, which is a national certification requirement not present in international standards like ISO or EN.
≠IS 15801 refers to other Indian Standards for test methods and ancillary requirements (e.g., IS 10910 for material in contact with foodstuffs), whereas ISO 15874 forms a self-contained series (Parts 1-7).
Key Similarities
≈Both IS 15801 and its international counterparts like ISO 15874 use the same fundamental material, Polypropylene Random Copolymer (PP-R), for hot and cold water applications.
≈The system for classifying pipe dimensions based on the 'S' Series (Standard Dimension Ratio or SDR) is identical, linking pipe geometry directly to its pressure-bearing capability.
≈Core performance tests and acceptance criteria are highly harmonized, including long-term hydrostatic strength (hoop stress), longitudinal reversion, and opacity.
≈The concept of 'Application Classes' (e.g., Class 1, Class 2 for different temperature profiles) to determine the required pipe pressure rating is a shared principle, ensuring fitness for purpose.

⚠ Verify details from original standards before use
What do the different pressure ratings (PN) for PP-R pipes mean?+
PN (Nominal Pressure) indicates the maximum pressure in bars the pipe can withstand with water at 27°C. For example, PN16 is rated for 16 bar at 27°C.
Which PP-R pipe series is for hot water?+
Generally, higher pressure classes like PN16 (SDR 7.4) and PN20 (SDR 6) are used for hot water applications to handle the combined effect of temperature and pressure, as per Class 2 of Table 4.
What is the design life of PP-R pipes as per this standard?+
The standard is based on a service life of 50 years when operated within the specified temperature and pressure conditions for its class (Annex A).
What is the standard colour for PP-R pipes?+
The standard does not specify a mandatory colour, but pipes are commonly available in green or white. The colour should be uniform throughout the pipe wall.
