IS 226 was India's original structural steel specification for standard quality mild steel. It has been SUPERSEDED by IS 2062 which covers a wider range of grades and better aligns with modern international standards. Old drawings and specs may still reference IS 226.
Specification for structural steel of standard quality used in general construction, bridges, and other structural applications. This standard has been superseded by IS 2062.
Key Values
Yield stress (t ≤ 20mm)Min 250 MPa
Tensile strength410-540 MPa
Elongation (gauge 5.65√So)Min 23%
Practical Notes
! SUPERSEDED — use IS 2062 for all new designs. IS 226 steel is no longer manufactured.
! Many older structures (pre-2000) were designed with IS 226 steel — relevant for assessment and retrofitting.
! IS 226 properties are approximately equivalent to IS 2062 Grade E250 (Fe 410W).
! If an old drawing specifies IS 226, substitute with IS 2062 E250 for repairs and additions.
