Methods of Test for Sealants for Joints in Civil Engineering Structures

ASTM C719 · ISO 11600

Summary

IS 10151 provides test methods for evaluating sealants used in construction joints — expansion joints, glazing joints, and concrete movement joints. Tests cover adhesion, cohesion, elasticity, and weathering resistance. Referenced when specifying sealant performance for buildings and highways.

Test methods for sealants used in joints of buildings, highways, and other civil engineering structures, covering adhesion, cohesion, elasticity, and weathering resistance.

Practical Notes
! Adhesion-in-peel is the most critical test for sealants — poor adhesion is the #1 cause of sealant failure.
! Always test sealant adhesion on the actual substrate (concrete, glass, aluminium) — different substrates give different results.
! Sealants must accommodate joint movement (expansion/contraction). The cyclic movement test simulates this.
! UV resistance is critical for exposed joints — cheap sealants degrade in 2-3 years in Indian sun.
