About
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT, formally renamed Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority/JNPA in 2021) is India's largest container port and a strategic gateway for ~50% of India's container trade. Located at Nhava Sheva, just south of Mumbai across the Thane Creek, the port was commissioned in May 1989 to relieve the chronically congested Mumbai Port (which had been operating since 1873 and was constrained by its city-centre location).
The port has 5 container terminals operated under different concessions: Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT, DP World), Gateway Terminals India (GTI), Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal (NSFT, APM Terminals), Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT, PSA International), and Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal (NSIGT, J&P Avantis). Total quay length: 4.6 km. Annual throughput: ~7 million TEU (2024) — making JNPT among the world's top 30 busiest container ports.
Key infrastructure: 5 dedicated container berths supporting up to 16,000 TEU vessels (Post-Panamax + New-Panamax classes), 11 km of internal road network, dedicated rail link to the Konkan Railway + Indian Railway broad-gauge mainline, and a 10 km dredged approach channel maintained at -15 m depth.
JNPT is the operational bridgehead for the Mumbai-Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) — Mumbai's eastern port-side traffic flows directly via Atal Setu reducing travel times for cargo transport from Mumbai factory zones to JNPT terminals.
