About the material

About steel & rebar

Reinforcement steel in India is manufactured per IS 1786:2008 (high-strength deformed bars for reinforced concrete) in grades Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 500D, and Fe 550D — the letter 'D' indicates enhanced ductility required for seismic / IS 13920 structures in Zones III, IV, and V. Diameters range from 6 mm (binding wire) to 40 mm (heavy structural); the most-used residential sizes are 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 mm. TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) bars are the universal standard, replacing older cold-twisted deformed (CTD) bars completely by 2008. Structural-grade steel sections — ISMB, ISMC, ISA, ISHB — follow IS 808 and IS 2062, used in industrial frames, warehouses, and composite construction.

What moves prices

Price drivers

  • Global iron ore and coking coal prices (~45-55 % of manufacturing cost)
  • Scrap steel prices (for induction-furnace route used by secondary mills)
  • Electricity tariff (primary driver for induction furnaces)
  • Indian government's import duty on flat/long products
  • Chinese export rebate policy (China accounts for ~53 % of global steel)
  • INR/USD exchange rate — iron ore and coking coal imported
Market trend

Recent steel & rebar price history

TMT prices spiked to ₹85-95/kg in 2022 during the Russia-Ukraine energy shock, then softened to ₹58-68/kg through 2024 as Chinese oversupply and weakened global demand pushed prices down. Q1 2026 has seen prices range ₹60-72/kg depending on brand and region, with premium brands (Tata Tiscon, JSW) trading at a 5-8 % premium over secondary mills. Prices are expected to firm up in the latter half of 2026 if the anti-dumping duty on Chinese cold-rolled steel is extended.

Buying guide

Buying tips

  • Check the IS 1786 marking embossed on the bar — rolled brand name, grade (500D), diameter, melting heat number
  • Premium brands (Tata Tiscon, JSW Neosteel) are worth the 5-8 % premium only for seismic-critical or high-rise projects
  • For simple residential G+1/G+2, SAIL, Vizag, Kamdhenu offer the same IS 1786 compliance at ~7-10 % lower cost
  • Buy full 12m lengths if possible — cutting charges are ₹2-3/piece at the dealer
  • Insist on the mill test certificate (MTC) for projects under municipal scrutiny — it's free, dealers sometimes 'forget' to give it
FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Fe 500 or Fe 500D?
Fe 500 suffices for gravity-only buildings in Zones I and II. Fe 500D is mandatory for buildings in seismic Zones III, IV, V and for any structure falling under IS 13920 ductile detailing — i.e., most urban Indian construction today. The cost premium is ~3-5 %.
Why does TMT price change week to week?
TMT tracks global scrap + iron ore + coking coal prices daily. Indian mills adjust dispatch rates weekly based on input costs and mill inventory. A ₹2-3/kg swing is normal; a ₹5/kg swing indicates a genuine market shift.
How much steel per sqft of RCC?
Rule of thumb: 4-5 kg/sqft for typical residential slabs and columns; 5-7 kg/sqft for commercial G+4+; 8-10 kg/sqft for structurally heavy (podium / transfer / long-span). Detailed BOQ via InfraLens's Material Calculator + RCC Design suite.
Is branded TMT really better than local?
For IS 1786 compliance, all BIS-approved mills deliver the same minimum properties. Branded brands add tighter tolerance on diameter, better surface corrosion protection, and traceability — worth the premium for seismic / high-rise / tender-gated work. Not required for G+1 residential.
What's the difference between TMT and CTD bars?
TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) bars are quenched from rolling heat, giving a hard outer martensitic layer and ductile ferrite-pearlite core — better ductility and weldability. CTD bars (cold-twisted) are obsolete and were phased out after IS 1786:2008.
