About the material

About interiors & glass

Interior and façade materials span structural glass per IS 2553 (plain float, toughened, laminated, DGU), aluminium sections per IS 733 / IS 1285, uPVC window profiles per IS 10182, aluminium composite panels (ACP), gypsum boards per IS 2095, and plaster of Paris per IS 2547. The market is tiered between large branded players (Saint-Gobain glass, Jindal aluminium, Fenesta/Aparna uPVC, Alstrong/Aludecor ACP) and local/unorganised supply. Energy-efficient façades (DGU, low-E glass) are mandated for buildings > 1,000 sqm plot per ECBC 2017 energy code.

What moves prices

Price drivers

  • Aluminium LME price (~50-60 % of section/ACP cost)
  • Float glass manufacturing cost (silica + soda ash + natural gas)
  • uPVC resin (PVC compound) — tracks crude oil
  • Import duty on Chinese aluminium profiles
  • Freight for oversized glass panels
  • Processing premium — toughened/laminated/DGU add 40-80 % over plain float
Market trend

Recent interiors & glass price history

Façade material prices rose 10-12 % in 2023 on aluminium and gas inflation, stabilised in 2024. 2026 sees DGU demand rising 15-20 % YoY with ECBC compliance now enforced in most state codes for commercial buildings. uPVC windows gaining against aluminium in residential segment — better thermal performance, competitive pricing, lifetime warranty. ACP has oversupply; prices flat to down 3-5 %.

Buying guide

Buying tips

  • Toughened glass only — plain float in doors/partitions fails building code for human-impact zones
  • DGU (double-glazed unit) pays back in 4-6 years through reduced AC load — mandatory in commercial envelope now
  • Aluminium T6 grade (6063-T6) for structural; T4 for non-load architectural only
  • uPVC: ensure multi-chamber profile (3+ chambers) with galvanised steel reinforcement inside — cheap uPVC profile is single-chamber and sags over 5 years
  • ACP: 4 mm PVDF (Alstrong, Aludecor, Viva) for exterior (UV-stable); 3 mm PE for interior (cheaper, not weather-resistant)

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Aluminium or uPVC windows?
Aluminium: stronger, sleeker, visible-frame. uPVC: better thermal/sound insulation, lifetime warranty, modern preference. uPVC costs ~20-30 % more than aluminium for equivalent span but pays back through AC savings. Aluminium still preferred for very large spans (> 3 m) and industrial/factory.
DGU — is it worth 2× the cost?
Double-Glazed Unit: 2 glass panes + air/argon spacer. Cuts heat ingress 40-50 %, noise ingress 25-30 dB. Cost: ₹550-900/sqft vs ₹250-450 for single 8 mm toughened. Payback via lower AC bills: 5-7 years in north India summers, faster in Chennai/Bangalore/Hyderabad.
Toughened or laminated glass for skylights?
Skylights MUST be laminated (safety requirement — on fracture, lamination holds fragments together, prevents injury below). Toughened alone is disallowed per IS 2553 overhead. For vertical glazing, toughened suffices.
Why are ACP panels cheaper than real metal cladding?
ACP = Aluminium Composite Panel — two thin aluminium skins (0.3-0.5 mm) sandwiching a plastic core (usually polyethylene or fire-retardant mineral). Total thickness 3-4 mm but aluminium content is only ~15 % by weight. Hence ~1/3 cost of equivalent solid aluminium panel. Risk: PE-core ACP is flammable (Grenfell Tower disaster) — use PVDF/FR-core for high-rise.
Gypsum ceiling — is it better than POP?
Gypsum board (Saint-Gobain, India Gypsum): factory-made, consistent, fast install (2-3 days for 1000 sqft), crack-free. POP (plaster of Paris): traditional, trowel-applied, slower (5-7 days), craft-dependent, prone to shrinkage cracks. Gypsum wins on speed + quality; POP only for decorative cornices / moulding.
