IS 8910:2019 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for general requirements for liquid penetrant testing. IS 8910 covers liquid penetrant testing (LPT/DPT) — the simplest NDT method for finding surface-breaking cracks, porosity, and defects. Red dye (visible) method is used on site; fluorescent method in workshops. Applied to welds, castings, and machined surfaces.

Surface-breaking defects only: cracks, porosity, laps, seams, and lack of fusion in welds. It CANNOT detect subsurface defects — use UT or RT for those.
Dye penetrant vs magnetic particle testing?+
DPT works on all materials (metals, ceramics, plastics). MPI only works on ferromagnetic materials (carbon steel, iron). MPI is faster and detects near-surface defects. DPT is more portable and versatile.
