This Indian Standard specifies the material, dimensional, performance, and installation requirements for prefabricated strip seal expansion joints used in bridges. It covers the steel edge profiles, the elastomeric sealing element, and the anchorage system to ensure durability and proper accommodation of structural movements up to 80 mm.

Earlier specification for material, design, manufacturing, testing, and acceptance requirements for strip seal expansion joints in bridges.

Quick Reference Values
Applicable movement rangeUp to 80 mm
Hardness of elastomeric seal (Shore A)63 ± 5
Minimum tensile strength of elastomeric seal13 MPa
Minimum elongation at break of elastomeric seal300%
Minimum yield strength of steel for profiles250 MPa
Minimum hot-dip galvanizing zinc coating610 g/m²
Practical Notes
Proper installation is as critical as material quality. Ensure the joint is installed at the correct gap based on the ambient temperature at the time of fixing.
The elastomeric seal is vulnerable to damage during installation. Careful handling and ensuring the seal is properly recessed below the traffic level are essential.
Site welding of steel profiles is not permitted; they must be supplied in full-length sections for the entire carriageway width to ensure integrity and water-tightness.
