IS 1387:1993 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for general requirements for supply of metallic materials. IS 1387 provides general requirements for supply of all metallic materials — the master standard for how metals should be ordered, inspected, tested, and certified. It covers test certificates, retesting rules, marking, and packaging. Referenced by every IS metal product specification.
General requirements for supply, inspection, testing, and certification of all metallic materials including steel, aluminium, copper, and their alloys.
Type 3.1 (manufacturer's inspection certificate with test results) is the most commonly specified for structural steel and reinforcement. Type 3.2 (third-party verified) is for critical applications.
What happens if a test fails?+
IS 1387 allows retesting on double the number of samples from the same lot. If retests pass, the lot is accepted. If retests fail, the lot is rejected.
