IS 10714:2001 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for pipe bedding. IS 10714 covers pipe bedding — the granular or concrete bed that supports buried pipes. Proper bedding is critical for pipe longevity — most pipe failures are due to poor bedding, not pipe defects. Bedding class determines the load-bearing factor used in pipe structural design.
Code of practice for bedding of buried pipes covering bedding classes, materials, compaction, and backfill requirements.
Granular material (sand/gravel) placed to provide 120° of arc support under the pipe, with compacted side fill. The most commonly specified bedding class for water and sewer pipes.
Why is bedding important?+
Bedding distributes soil and traffic loads evenly around the pipe. Without proper bedding, loads concentrate at pipe bottom causing cracking (rigid pipes) or excessive deflection (flexible pipes). 80% of pipe failures are bedding-related.
