The extra width provides a minimum 1.2m wide 'transfer aisle' beside the car, essential for a person to open their door fully and transfer to/from a wheelchair. Proximity to an accessible entrance minimizes travel distance over a safe, accessible route, which is critical for many persons with disabilities.
Accessible bays must be located within 30m of a building's accessible entrance or lift lobby. The path connecting the bay to the entrance must be an 'accessible route'—firm, level, and free of obstacles like kerbs or steps.
