About

₹91,000 crore semiconductor fab at Dholera SIR — India's FIRST major commercial chip-fab, sanctioned 2024 with 50,000 wafer/month capacity at first commercial operation 2026.
Also known asTata Semiconductor FabIndia's First Major Chip Fab

Tata Electronics Semiconductor Fab is India's first major commercial semiconductor fabrication plant — a ₹91,000 crore (US$11 billion) facility under construction at Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), Gujarat. Sanctioned by the Indian government in February 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission, the fab is being executed by Tata Electronics in joint venture with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan.

The fab will produce chips on 28 nm + 50 nm + 90 nm + 110 nm process nodes — older but volume-stable technology nodes used in automotive, industrial, defense, and consumer electronics. Initial capacity at first commercial operation: 50,000 wafers/month (300 mm wafers), scaling to peak capacity of 100,000 wafers/month by 2030.

The project is 70% funded by Government of India under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme + Capital Outlay Subsidy — the largest single PLI grant ever made. PSMC provides the technology transfer + initial workforce training; Tata Electronics provides facility execution + long-term operations.

Key infrastructure: 850-acre site in Dholera, integrated cleanroom (Class-1 + Class-10 sections totalling 60,000 sqm), 24/7 dedicated 200 MW power supply via dedicated substation, ultrapure water treatment plant (10 million litres/day), specialty gas + chemicals supply chain. The site requires near-zero vibration + magnetic field interference — engineering specifications among the strictest of any Indian industrial project.

First commercial production targeted Q4 2026 — making this India's largest single industrial investment + the first commercial semiconductor production in India in 50+ years (after the 1980s Semiconductor Complex Limited Mohali wound down). Long-term economic significance: cuts India's semiconductor import dependence, currently $25+ billion annually, by ~10-15%.
