IS 638:2005 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for sheet rubber (natural and synthetic). IS 638 covers rubber sheets in various compounds and hardnesses for general engineering use — gasket cutting, tank lining, vibration isolation, packing, and conveyor skirting. Specifies properties by rubber type (NR, SBR, EPDM, neoprene, nitrile, silicone) and hardness grade (40-80 Shore A).

EPDM — excellent resistance to water, steam, and ozone. For petroleum/oil service, use nitrile (NBR). For general purpose, natural rubber (NR) is cheapest with good properties.
