IS 5831 specifies PVC compounds used for insulation and sheathing of electric cables. Type A is for general purpose cables (up to 70°C), Type B for heat resistant (up to 85°C). Every PVC cable manufactured per IS 694 or IS 1554 uses compounds meeting IS 5831.
Specification for PVC insulation and sheathing compounds used in electric cables covering types, physical properties, and testing requirements.
Key Values
Type A conductor temp max70°C
Type B conductor temp max85°C
Tensile strength min (Type A)12.5 MPa
Practical Notes
! Type A (70°C) is standard for house wiring and general LT cables.
! Type B (85°C) is specified for higher temperature environments or higher current ratings.
! PVC cables should NOT be used where temperature exceeds 70°C continuously — use XLPE (IS 7098) instead.
! PVC emits HCl (toxic) during fire — for fire-safety critical areas, use LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cables.
