IS 5831:2018 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for pvc insulation and sheath of electric cables. IS 5831 specifies PVC compounds used for insulation and sheathing of electric cables. Type A is for general purpose cables (up to 70°C), Type B for heat resistant (up to 85°C). Every PVC cable manufactured per IS 694 or IS 1554 uses compounds meeting IS 5831.
Specification for PVC insulation and sheathing compounds used in electric cables covering types, physical properties, and testing requirements.
What is the temperature rating of PVC insulated cables?+
Standard PVC (Type A per IS 5831): 70°C continuous conductor temperature. Heat resistant PVC (Type B): 85°C. Short circuit rating is higher (160°C for 5 seconds).
PVC vs XLPE cable insulation?+
PVC (IS 5831): cheaper, easier to strip, 70°C rating, adequate for LT. XLPE (IS 7098): more expensive, 90°C rating, better for HT and high current, better electrical properties.
