IS 504:2020 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for ceramic glazed tiles — specification. IS 504 covers ceramic glazed tiles for walls and floors. Tiles are classified by water absorption: BIII (>10%, wall only), BIIb (3-6%, light floor), BIa (<0.5%, porcelain/vitrified for heavy-duty floors). ISI mark is mandatory for tiles sold in India.
Specification for ceramic glazed tiles for wall and floor applications covering classification, dimensions, physical properties, and testing.
What is the difference between vitrified and ceramic tiles?+
Vitrified tiles (BIb, <3% absorption) are denser, harder, and more water-resistant. Ceramic tiles (BIII, >10%) are porous, suitable only for walls. Vitrified can be used for both floor and wall.
What is PEI rating?+
PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rates abrasion resistance: PEI 0-1 for walls only, PEI 2-3 for light residential floors, PEI 4 for commercial, PEI 5 for heavy commercial/industrial floors.
