IS 4691:2018 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for degrees of protection provided by enclosures (ip code). IS 4691 defines the IP (Ingress Protection) code used worldwide to classify enclosure protection. IP55 = dust protected + water jet protected (standard for outdoor motors). IP67 = dust tight + temporary submersion. Every electrical enclosure specification references this standard.
Classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment against ingress of solid objects, dust, and water.
Minimum IP55 (dust protected + water jet protected). IP65 for harsh outdoor or wash-down environments. IP44 is only acceptable for sheltered outdoor locations.
What does IP67 mean?+
IP6 = completely dust tight (no dust ingress). IP_7 = protected against temporary immersion in water (1 metre depth for 30 minutes). Common for smartphones, submersible pumps, and underground junction boxes.
