Summary

IS 4691 defines the IP (Ingress Protection) code used worldwide to classify enclosure protection. IP55 = dust protected + water jet protected (standard for outdoor motors). IP67 = dust tight + temporary submersion. Every electrical enclosure specification references this standard.

Classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment against ingress of solid objects, dust, and water.

Key Values
IP20Touch safe (indoor panel)
IP44Splash proof (indoor wet area)
IP55Dust/jet proof (outdoor standard)
Practical Notes
! IP55 is the MINIMUM for outdoor electrical equipment in India (motors, junction boxes, panels).
! IP65 for wash-down areas, food processing, and chemical plants.
! IP67/68 for equipment that may be submerged (submersible pumps, underground junction boxes).
! First digit 6 = completely dust tight. First digit 5 = dust protected (some ingress but no harmful deposits).
! Second digit 5 = water jets from any direction. Second digit 7 = temporary immersion (1m for 30 min).
