General Tolerances for Dimensions and Geometrical Tolerances for Machined Parts

ISO 2768-1
CurrentFrequently UsedCode of PracticeGeneral · Testing Methods and Quality Control
Summary

IS 2102 defines default tolerances for machined dimensions when specific tolerances are not shown on drawings. Four classes: f (fine), m (medium), c (coarse), v (very coarse). Prevents disputes between manufacturer and buyer when drawing tolerances are missing.

General dimensional and geometrical tolerances for machined parts where individual tolerance is not specified on the drawing.

Key Values
Class m tolerance (6-30mm)±0.2 mm
Class m tolerance (30-120mm)±0.3 mm
Class m tolerance (120-400mm)±0.5 mm
Practical Notes
! Most Indian workshops use Class 'm' (medium) as default when drawing says 'general tolerances per IS 2102'.
! Always specify the tolerance class on the drawing title block: 'General tolerances: IS 2102-m'.
! For sheet metal and welded fabrication, Class 'c' or 'v' is more realistic than 'f' or 'm'.
