IS 13920:2016 — Clause 8.1

Beam-Column Joint

Clause 8.1 addresses the detailing of beam-column joints, which are among the most critical regions in a seismic frame. The joint core must have transverse reinforcement to resist the high shear forces generated when beams and columns develop plastic hinges. When beams frame into all four faces, the confining reinforcement spacing may be relaxed to 150 mm, but the joint must still have adequate hoops. Column longitudinal bars should not be cranked (bent) within the joint.

Key Requirements

  • •The special confining reinforcement required at the end of the column (lo zone) shall be provided through the joint as well, unless the joint is confined by beams framing into all four faces
  • •When beams frame into all four faces of the joint and each beam width is at least 3/4 of the column width, the spacing of confining hoops in the joint may be increased to 150 mm
  • •A joint which has beams framing into only three or fewer faces shall have the full special confining reinforcement as required for the column lo zone
  • •Column longitudinal reinforcement shall not be cranked (bent) inside the beam-column joint region
  • •Longitudinal beam bars shall be anchored in the joint with development length computed for 1.25 fy in tension
  • •The anchorage of beam bars shall be measured from the face of the column core (not the column face)

Practical Notes

✓Corner columns and edge columns always need full confining reinforcement through the joint since beams do not frame into all 4 faces. Only interior joints with beams on all sides get the relaxation.
✓Anchoring beam bars in small columns is often problematic — a 20 mm bar in M25 concrete needs about 940 mm development length (at 1.25 fy), which may require hooks or headed bars in 300 mm columns.
✓The 'no cranking in joint' rule means column bar offsets must happen above or below the joint region, adding complexity to the bar schedule.

Common Mistakes

⚠Omitting confining hoops through the joint region entirely — even with beams on all 4 faces, hoops at 150 mm are required.
⚠Cranking column bars within the beam depth (joint region) to adjust column position from floor to floor — this must be done above or below the joint.
⚠Using standard development length (Ld for fy) instead of enhanced development length (Ld for 1.25 fy) for anchoring beam bars in the joint.
