IS 1391:2018 is the Indian Standard (BIS) for room air conditioners. IS 1391 is the specification for room air conditioners — the most common cooling equipment in Indian buildings. Covers window and split types, both fixed-speed and inverter. ISI mark and BEE star rating are mandatory for ACs sold in India. ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) determines the star rating.

Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio — measures AC efficiency over the entire cooling season (not just at rated conditions). Higher ISEER = more efficient. BEE star rating is based on ISEER: 5-star ISEER >4.65 for split inverter ACs (2024 norms).
Window AC or split AC?+
Split ACs dominate the market (90%+). Advantages: quieter indoor unit, flexible installation, higher efficiency (inverter option). Window ACs: cheaper, simpler installation, but noisier and less efficient.
