- Rates sourced from MJP SSR 2023-24 (with 2024-25 escalation column). 5 corrigenda dated up to 20-Dec-2024 exist (mjp.maharashtra.gov.in publications page) but are scanned-image PDFs in Marathi requiring manual review for tender-grade use. For cost feasibility this Builder is good as-is; for tender submission, cross-check each item against the latest corrigendum.
- JJM Village Water Supply standard: 15 m³/hr filter for ~350 HH at 135 lpcd + 8-hour pumping. Smaller (5-10 m³/hr) for hamlets; larger (25-50 m³/hr) for cluster schemes.
- Filtration rate is the design parameter: standard 5 m³/m²/hr per CPHEEO + IS 8419. Going up to 6 reduces filter area + cost but needs better pre-treatment (flash mix + clarifier mandatory).
- Filter media gradation per IS 8419: top 600 mm = sharp filter sand (effective size 0.45-0.55 mm, uniformity coefficient < 1.65). Below: graded gravel 30 + 50 + 75 + 100 mm in 4 layers of 75-150 mm each totalling ~450 mm.
- Underdrain system: perforated pipe laterals on header pipe, or false-bottom strainer plates with nozzles. CPHEEO Manual prefers strainer false-bottom for ease of backwash but pipe laterals are cheaper.
- Flash mixer: 30-60 second detention time for alum + lime dosing. Tiny chamber, typically 0.5 m³ for 15 m³/hr capacity.
- Clarifier (clari-flocculator): 2-3 hour detention. For 15 m³/hr that's 30-45 m³ tank — substantial structure, often a clari-flocculator with mechanical flash + flocc paddle.
- Clear-water reservoir (CWR) downstream: 3-hour storage minimum per CPHEEO. For 15 m³/hr that's 45 m³ tank. Use the [UGSR Water Tank BOQ Builder](/boq/ugsr-water-tank) for the CWR civil estimate — quote separately.
- Excludes: filter house structure (brick walls + RCC roof on top of filter box, +30-40% to civil cost); chlorine cylinder storage room; electrical panels + cabling; pumps (raw-water + clear-water + backwash); chemical storage tanks (alum + lime + chlorine); operator's room + lab; access road; boundary wall + landscaping.
**Rapid Sand Filter (RSF)** is the dominant water-treatment technology for small + medium water-supply systems in India — every JJM surface-water scheme, every state PHED village WTP uses it. The CPHEEO Manual + IS 8419 standard configuration: rectangular RCC filter box with graded sand-on-gravel media bed, underdrain system, wash-water trough, valve gallery for backwash control, and chlorine dosing for disinfection. Typical capacity 5-50 m³/hr for village schemes. This Builder generates the complete cost per CPWD DSR 2023 for civil + CPHEEO Manual + state PHED placeholder rates for filter media and valves.
How a Rapid Sand Filter works
Raw water (after clarification + alum dosing) flows downward through 600 mm of graded sand resting on 450 mm of graded gravel. Suspended particles + flocs are trapped in the top sand layer. Underdrain at the bottom collects filtered water + sends it to the clear-water sump for chlorination. Every 24-48 hours (depending on raw-water quality), the filter is BACKWASHED — clean water + air pumped upward through the bed at 4-6× normal flow, fluidising the sand and washing out trapped solids. Wash water (containing the dirt) flows over the wash-water troughs to a drain. Cycle repeats. With proper maintenance, filter media lasts 2-3 years before replacement.
Treatment train: flash mix + clari + RSF + chlorine
Complete small-WTP train: (1) **Flash mixer** — 30-60s detention, alum + lime dosed inline; (2) **Clari-flocculator** — 2-3 hr detention, slow paddles agitate to grow flocs that settle out; (3) **RSF** — current article ⤴, polishes remaining particles; (4) **Chlorine dosing** in the inlet of clear-water sump; (5) **CWR** — 3-hr storage downstream of filter. Skipping the clari (going directly raw → flash → RSF) is acceptable for low-turbidity (< 30 NTU) sources but the filter media has to be backwashed twice as often. JJM specifies the full train for any source with turbidity > 30 NTU.
