- Default internal dimensions match IS 2470 Part 1 standard sizes. Override the form fields if your site has constraints — the formulas auto-adjust.
- IS 2470 sizes (length × width × liquid depth): 5-user 1.5×0.75×1.0 m · 10-user 2.0×0.9×1.0 m · 20-user 2.0×1.2×1.4 m · 50-user 4.0×1.5×1.7 m.
- Cover slab is 125 mm RCC with 8 mm bars @ 150 mm c/c bothways. Steel = 100 kg/m³. Bump to 150 mm + 110 kg/m³ for spans > 2.5 m.
- Internal cement-mortar waterproofing (DSR 22.5) is recommended for any septic tank in expansive clay / black-cotton soil + JJM-funded community systems. Skip toggle for hard-rock or sandy-permeable sites where exfiltration is acceptable.
- 2 nos manhole covers (one over each compartment); 4 m of 150 mm RCC pipe approximates 2 nos inlet + 2 nos outlet runs of ~1 m each. Adjust manually if pipe lengths are different.
- Excludes: baffle wall (small brick partition between settling + scum chambers — add ~0.15 m³ brickwork via 6.4.2 manually), vent pipe (4 m × 50 mm GI ~₹1,500), inlet/outlet inspection chambers upstream, soak pit downstream (see [Soak Pit](/boq/soak-pit) template).
A **septic tank** is the on-site sewage treatment chamber that every Indian household or community without sewer connection uses. It receives black-water from toilets, holds it in two compartments for settling + anaerobic breakdown, and discharges treated effluent to a soak pit downstream. **IS 2470 Part 1 (Code of Practice for Installation of Septic Tanks)** specifies the rectangular brick-masonry tank with PCC bed, internal cement plaster + waterproofing, RCC cover slab with manhole, and inlet/outlet RCC pipes. Sized 5 to 50 users for SBM-G household + community sanitation, larger for commercial complexes. This BOQ Builder generates the complete cost per CPWD DSR 2023.
What's included and what's excluded
**Included** — earthwork in foundation trench, PCC bed below tank, brick masonry foundation + above plinth walls, DPC band, internal cement plaster (with optional waterproofing additive per IS 2645), RCC cover slab with steel reinforcement and centering, 2 nos manhole covers, 4 m of 150 mm RCC pipe for inlet + outlet runs. **Excluded** — baffle wall between settling and scum compartments (small partition, ~0.15 m³ brickwork — add manually); vent pipe (4 m × 50 mm GI pipe ~₹1,500); upstream inspection chamber for sewage from toilet; downstream soak pit (use the dedicated [Soak Pit](/boq/soak-pit) template); secondary chamber if 3-compartment design preferred; tile finish on internal surface (optional for ease-of-cleaning, +₹400/m²).
IS 2470 Part 1 standard sizes
Per IS 2470 Part 1 Table 2, the **liquid-volume requirement** scales with users + accumulation time (de-sludging frequency): for 1-year cleaning interval (CPWD-recommended), 90 litres / user / day liquid retention + 30 days sludge accumulation. Standard tank sizes: **5-user** = 1.5 m × 0.75 m × 1.0 m liquid depth (1.125 m³); **10-user** = 2.0 m × 0.9 m × 1.0 m (1.8 m³); **15-user** = 2.0 m × 1.0 m × 1.2 m (2.4 m³); **20-user** = 2.0 m × 1.2 m × 1.4 m (3.36 m³); **30-user** = 3.0 m × 1.2 m × 1.5 m (5.4 m³); **50-user** = 4.0 m × 1.5 m × 1.7 m (10.2 m³). Free board (300 mm above liquid line) is added for ventilation + grease layer. This Builder pre-loads these sizes when you pick the user-count dropdown; you can override per site constraint.
