- Intake well is mandatory whenever raw-water source is surface water — river, canal, dam reservoir. Bypassing it means raw water carries sediment + debris that damages pumps and filter media.
- Sizing: internal diameter should accommodate the largest sump pump submerged + 600 mm working space around it. Standard JJM intake-well diameter is 3-4 m for pumps up to 25 HP; larger municipal systems use 5-6 m.
- Well depth below NGL: must reach minimum below maximum draw-down water level in the source. For seasonal rivers, design for minimum-flow level. For dams, design for dead-storage level + 1 m margin.
- Bar screens at inlet ports prevent fish + debris > 25 mm from entering. Removable for cleaning. Spec: SS 304 angle iron frame + SS 304 round bars @ 25 mm c/c. Two ports allow alternation during cleaning.
- Sluice gate / penstock at inlet allows isolation for maintenance. Spec: CI body + brass spindle, manual operation up to 600 mm size, motorised above.
- Internal cement-based waterproofing (DSR 22.5) is mandatory per IS 3370 for water-retaining structures + prevents algal growth + maintains water quality.
- Excludes: pump house above ground (separate brick / RCC structure ~₹2-3 lakh for 25 m²); raw-water pump set (typically end-suction centrifugal, 25-50 HP for village schemes); MS / RCC stairs / cat-ladder for maintenance access; pump suction strainer + foot valve; level sensor / float switch arrangement; lightning protection rod; chlorination shed (optional pre-chlorination).
An **intake well** (also called jack well) is the surface-water source structure for any water-supply scheme that draws from a river, canal, or dam reservoir. Per **IS 9842 + CPHEEO Manual** standard configuration: circular RCC well with raft foundation + cylindrical walls + bar-screened inlet ports + sluice gates + cover slab + suction pipe to the raw-water pump. Sizes typically 3-6 m internal diameter × 3-12 m depth below NGL. This Builder generates the complete cost per CPWD DSR 2023 for civil work + placeholder rates for specialised valves and screens (verify against your state PHED SOR).
When to use intake well vs borewell
**Borewell** is the default for rural water supply when groundwater is available at reasonable depth + quality. **Intake well** is mandatory when: (a) groundwater is contaminated (fluoride, arsenic, salinity); (b) groundwater table is too deep (> 300 m) or yield insufficient; (c) the village is near a perennial river / canal / dam reservoir with adequate flow. CPHEEO Manual recommends surface water source when sustainable yield > 4 lps and quality meets IS 10500 raw-water standards. Most river-bank villages in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam use intake wells; most peninsular India villages use borewells.
Construction sequence
(1) De-silt + level the bank / source area. (2) Excavate circular pit to full depth + 300 mm working space radially. (3) PCC bed below raft, 100 mm thick. (4) RCC raft (400-500 mm thick cylindrical disc). (5) Cure 7 days. (6) Cylindrical wall shuttering (curved formwork) + concrete pour in 1.5 m lifts. (7) Install sleeve pipes at inlet port elevations BEFORE second wall lift. (8) Continue wall pours to top. (9) RCC cover slab with manhole opening. (10) Internal waterproofing. (11) Install bar screens + sluice gates in inlet ports. (12) Suction pipe drop into well + connect to above-ground pump.
