This standard specifies the general requirements and test methods for manually operated general purpose switches, for a.c. only, with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A, intended for household and similar fixed electrical installations. It is technically closely aligned with IEC 60669-1.

Specifies general requirements for manually operated switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations.

Quick Reference Values
maximum rated voltage440 V a.c.
maximum rated current63 A
minimum insulation resistance5 MΩ at 500 V d.c.
electric strength test voltage up to 250V2000 V for 1 minute
maximum temperature rise for terminals45 K
Practical Notes
When selecting switches for damp, outdoor, or hazardous locations, ensure the enclosure provides the appropriate IP rating (e.g., IP44, IP55) in addition to IS 3854 compliance.
The glow-wire test (Clause 24) is critical for manufacturers to ensure that polymer enclosures are self-extinguishing and do not propagate fire in the event of an electrical fault.
Terminal capacity must be strictly adhered to; using under-sized or over-sized wire compared to Table 4 can lead to poor contact and overheating.
