- **PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) Girder Bridge** = the modern standard for spans 30-50 m. Pre-cast or cast-in-situ I-girders are tensioned via high-strength steel cables (15.2 mm dia 7-wire strand per IS 14268) anchored at girder ends — pre-compressing the concrete so it can resist tensile stresses under live load. Allows longer + lighter spans than conventional RCC T-beam.
- **Total length** = n_spans × single_span_length. Default 3-span × 40 m = 120 m total. NHAI 4-lane bridges commonly 100-200 m total in 2-4 spans.
- **Span length 30-50 m**: 30 m for short PSC where RCC T-beam becomes uneconomic; 40 m is the workhorse (standard 4-lane NHAI); 50 m for longer single-span needs (river crossing without intermediate pier).
- **I-girder depth ladder**: span/14 to span/16. 30 m → 1.8 m; 40 m → 2.4 m; 50 m → 2.7-3.0 m. Width: 400 mm web with 600 mm top flange + 800 mm bottom flange.
- **PSC strand quantity** ~120 kg per m³ of girder concrete — higher than conventional RCC's 100 kg/m³ because cables are continuous full-length + anchorage hardware adds weight. M40 concrete minimum per IRC 18.
- **Pile foundation default** for PSC bridges because pier loads are very high (40-50 m single span concentrates load) + most large rivers have soft / waterlogged subgrades requiring deep foundation. 6 nos × 1000 mm dia × 18 m deep bored piles per support (4 abutments + 2 × n_piers).
- **Cost target** for default 3-span × 40 m × 12 m wide = ~₹6-9 Cr per CPWD DSR (excluding GST + contractor profit). **NHAI tender awards** for similar PSC 4-lane bridge: ₹2-3 Cr per span = ₹6-9 Cr for 3-span. Per m² of deck: ₹50-70k. Add ~30-40 % for major rivers with deep piles + cofferdam.
- **Excludes**: river-protection works (guide bunds, launching apron, gabion mattresses); cofferdam for pier construction in flowing water (₹15-30L per pier in monsoon-prone sites); navigation lighting + warning signs (₹2-5L); approach embankment beyond the 5 m approach slab (use separate earthwork BOQ); utility ducts; load testing + instrumentation (₹3-5L per bridge); 3rd-party quality audit (₹2-4L).
The **Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) Girder Bridge** is the modern standard for medium-to-major bridges in India — every NHAI 4-lane bridge, every Bharatmala river crossing, every state highway upgrade defaults to PSC for spans 30-60 m. Per **IRC 18 (PSC Bridges) + IRC 112 (Concrete Road Bridges) + IS 1343**, the construction uses pre-cast or cast-in-situ I-girders tensioned with 15.2 mm 7-wire HTS strand (per IS 14268) anchored at girder ends, mounted on RCC pier-caps via POT-PTFE bearings, with monolithic deck slab cast over girders. Substructure: RCC piers + abutments on pile foundation (6 nos × 1000 mm dia × 18 m deep typical). Standard NHAI configuration: 2-4 spans × 30-50 m each, 100-200 m total bridge length. Cost ~₹6-9 Cr for default 3 × 40 m × 12 m wide. This BOQ Builder generates the complete per-bridge cost.
PSC vs RCC T-Beam — when to use which
**RCC T-Beam** ([Minor RCC T-Beam Bridge](/boq/minor-rcc-tbeam-bridge)) — economical for spans ≤ 18 m. Cast-in-situ RCC girders, deck slab cast monolithic. Simple construction, slow to cure (28-day strength wait per span). **PSC Girder** (this template) — economical for spans 25-60 m. Pre-stressed I-girders, lighter (smaller cross-section for same span), faster construction (pre-cast off-site or pre-stressed on-site within 7-10 days), longer life (~40-60 years vs 30-40 for RCC). **Cross-over**: at ~20 m span, PSC becomes cost-effective; below 18 m, RCC is cheaper. **Above 60 m**: switch to steel girders or cable-stayed designs.
Pre-tensioned vs Post-tensioned
**Pre-tensioned PSC** — strand is tensioned FIRST (anchored to abutments of casting bed), concrete cast around, cured to 70-80 % strength, then strand released — concrete absorbs the pre-stress via bond. Used for pre-cast factory girders. Cheaper for repetitive production. **Post-tensioned PSC** — concrete cast first with hollow ducts, cured, then strand threaded through ducts + tensioned + grouted. Used for cast-in-situ girders + segmental construction. More flexible (length not limited by casting bed). Most NHAI PSC bridges use POST-tensioned for cast-in-situ; pre-tensioned for pre-cast plant-supplied girders (Larsen, Tata Projects, ITD). The Builder doesn't distinguish — both use ~120 kg/m³ HTS strand.
