| Your inputsClear span 25 m · Superstructure type Steel truss · Walkway clear width 2.5 m · Clear height below FOB 5.5 m · Staircase width 3.0 m · Accessibility lift · Roof / shelter over walkway · MS railing 1.1 m height both sides | TOTAL | ₹12,74,213 | ||||
- **Foot Over Bridge (FOB)** = pedestrian bridge crossing a road / railway / nallah / canal at-height. Mandatory at busy traffic intersections + every railway station + congested urban arterial crossings (per Indian Roads Congress + RDSO + state municipal bylaws).
- **Superstructure choice**: **Steel truss** — modular, fast install (1-2 weeks), can be lifted into place during night traffic block, ~50 % cheaper than RCC box. **RCC box girder** — heavier, permanent, longer life (60+ years vs 30-40 for steel + paint), aesthetics + acoustic privacy. Choose steel for retrofit/urgent; RCC for long-life institutional projects.
- **Span ladder**: 15 m for narrow road + small nallah; 20-25 m for standard urban arterial / 2-lane road; 30 m for railway 1-2 track; 40 m for multi-track railway / wide divided highway.
- **Walkway width**: 2.0 m IRC minimum; 2.5 m standard urban; 3.0 m+ for high-footfall (railway station, mall vicinity). Higher footfall → wider walkway prevents bottleneck.
- **Accessibility**: Per **Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 + Harmonised Guidelines 2016**, all new FOBs MUST have lift OR ramp (slope ≤ 1:12). Lift preferred for FOBs > 4.5 m height; ramp preferred for shorter / smaller-footprint sites where lift maintenance is impractical.
- **Roof / shelter**: Highly recommended (95 %+ of modern Indian FOBs have it) — protects pedestrians from rain + sun + bird droppings. GI sheet on light MS truss is standard.
- **Cost target** for default 25 m steel-truss FOB with 2.5 m walkway + 2 staircases + 2 lifts + roof + railings: approximately **₹60-90 lakh** per CPWD DSR 2023. RCC-box variant: ₹90L-1.3Cr. Without lifts (only ramps): subtract ₹15-25L. Add ~30 % for railway-FOB (RDSO-spec + traffic-block premium).
- **Excludes**: lift car + machinery + control panel (~₹8-15L per lift, separate procurement); CCTV + lighting + power (~₹2-4L); signage + wayfinding; paint / cladding (basic paint included; designer cladding adds ₹3-8L); traffic-block coordination charges for road / railway closure during erection (~₹2-5L); 3rd-party load test + certification (~₹1-2L).
The **Foot Over Bridge (FOB)** is the pedestrian-only bridge crossing roads, railways, nallahs, and canals at-height — every busy urban intersection, every railway station, every high-traffic school / hospital crossing has one (or needs one). Per **IRC 99 (Footways & Cycleways) + RDSO Manual (for railway FOB) + Harmonised Guidelines 2016 (Accessibility)**, the standard construction is steel-truss OR RCC-box superstructure with 2.0-3.0 m walkway width, MS handrails, GI-sheet roof, dual staircases (with intermediate landings every 8 risers), AND mandatory accessibility lift OR wheelchair ramp. Span 15-40 m clear depending on the road / track count being crossed. Cost ~₹60-90L civil for default 25 m steel-truss FOB; ~₹90L-1.3Cr for RCC-box version. This BOQ Builder generates the complete per-FOB cost.
Steel truss vs RCC box — when to use each
**Steel truss FOB** is the modern default for: (a) Retrofit projects requiring fast installation (entire FOB can be assembled adjacent to site + lifted into place in a single overnight traffic block — Mumbai's Skywalks, Bengaluru's FOBs use this); (b) Sites with weight-restricted foundations (steel ~30 % lighter than RCC for same span); (c) Budget-constrained municipal projects (~50 % cheaper than equivalent RCC). Drawbacks: requires periodic re-painting (every 5-7 years), shorter life (~30-40 years), noise transmission (footsteps audible). **RCC box girder FOB** is preferred for: (a) Premium institutional projects (railway terminus, hospital, government building) where 60+ year life justifies higher cost; (b) Sites where aesthetics or sound-attenuation matter (concrete cladding aesthetics, no footstep noise to street below); (c) Cyclone / coastal sites where steel corrosion is rapid. Most Indian municipal new FOBs (2018-2026) trend toward steel for the speed + cost advantage.
Accessibility mandates — lift vs ramp
**Per RPwD Act 2016 + Harmonised Guidelines 2016**, every NEW pedestrian FOB must provide wheelchair access via EITHER a lift OR ramp. Old (pre-2016) FOBs are non-compliant — many were retrofitted via lift addition by Indian Railways under Adarsh Stations + Smart Cities programmes. **Lift** is preferred for: FOBs > 4.5 m height (ramp at 1:12 becomes unwieldy: 5 m height = 60 m ramp run), congested urban sites (no land for long ramp), high-volume usage (mall, station — lift handles 30+ users/min vs ramp's 3-5). Lift adds ₹8-15L per shaft (car + machinery + 3-year AMC). **Ramp** is preferred for: shorter heights (≤ 4.5 m); rural / smaller-budget sites without lift-maintenance capacity; canal / nallah crossings with generous land for ramp run. The Builder allows toggling either (or both) — most new urban FOBs have BOTH (lift for main use, ramp as backup during power cuts).
